Default Sangoma ("Witch Doctor")

A witch doctor (in southern Africa known as a Sangoma) often refers to exotic healers that believe that maladies are caused by magic and are therefore best cured by it, as opposed to science or developed medicine.

Therefore, the Sangoma would be a utility healing class focusing on turning negative conditions and hexes into regen and countering those conditions and hexes back to the caster or attacker.

Attributes:

Reformation: Primary Attribute - possibly increase the speed of hex or condition removal like a fast casting effect, or increase energy return when a hex or condition is applied to you.

Some Kinda' Evil(E)
Remove Elite Hex spell from target ally transfering it and its full duration to the caster.
______

Black Magic: Increases effectiveness of black magic spells

Bad Joo-Joo(E)
For 12 Seconds target foe suffers from -5 health degeneration. If Bad Joo-Joo is removed prematurely, target foe and all adjacent foes suffer from poison for 10 seconds.
_______

Voodoo: Increases the effectiveness of Voodoo skills and those related to holding Voodoo dolls.

Mimic Lao(E)
Create a Voodoo doll of target opponent. While holding this doll, each hex or condition you recieve is also applied to that target. While holding this doll you move 15% slower and take 15% longer to activate spells. If target opponent dies, Mimic Lao is destroyed.

Sorry, Ill try to finish this up later, its gvg time. But this is the general idea for the character. One of focuses on condition and hex removal and reversal.

Thumbs up Excellent concept

Not that I'm really qualified to make such statements

And it's not just that I'm biased because I'm South African either I actually don't like the real-world spiritual connotation so if I were going to implement the idea I would keep the general concept

but turn it into something more Guild Wars-y (like they did with the Monk, Dervish, Paragon and Ritualist). Make it fit in with the GW pantheon and all that (Grenth needed another patroncy of a class IMO ).

Plus I think you just missed the deadline for cool African-themed ideas

I think the Sangoma (it's fine for a working title ) could work well with the Monk's condition drawing skills as well as its own new brand of hex drawing skills.

He should not be rendered impotent if you're facing foes that do not use hexes or conditions, however.

Well, the concept doesnt have to be of African descent. If the story line were swayed more towards Voodoo and Black Magic, it would more closely identify with 1800-1900 South American history. (Louisiana, Mississippi, ect..)

Wouldnt let me add the fourth attribute to the original post, so here it is.

Loa Attunement- Increases the power of Spiritual Attunement skills and those closely related to conversing with spirits.

Rest Thier Souls(E)
All Spirtual effects in the area of where this chant is activated are turned off for the duration of the chant. When Rest Thier Souls ends, all spirits in the area die after 20 seconds.

I think the name is awsome, and the general function is rather useful too. We lack a strong alternative to straight healing, and a healer which also has a focus on condition and hex removal would be a powerful asset.

But in order to give it an edge and advantage in its genre, I would suggest more abilities which prevent and "vacinate" players from effects like conditions and hexes.

Consider this, a foe is using poison arrow, the common counter to the ailment poison would be condition removal, but with poison arrow, the poison will just be reapplied on the next hit. Also, consider Burning, which often deals its damage so fast that even if you did remove it, your probably only preventing 7 or 14 damage for the last second or 2 of burning it would have lasted. But consider this, if you had a condition removal spell which prevented that character from receiving the same condition again for a period of time. Call it a cure, or Vacination, or condition protection of some sort. Lets say this class has a spell call immunity, which cures a condition and prevents poison, disease and blindness for a period of time. Or a spell like armor bound wound, which removes a condition and prevents deepwound and bleeding and dazed for a period of time.

Likewise with hexes, the ability to remove a hex and make that character immune to the same hex for a period of time would prevent certain hex spamming techniques, or a hex removal which removed a hex and prevented the next hex.

For a new writer I am very impressed, the effort and knowledge to choose a unique and facinating class name, and also gearing toward a healer alternative vacancy is very intuitive.

P.S. you should use the edit button to compile your developement of the class in the original post.

1800-1900 South American history may be to much of a jump, and Shhh don't talk about a time that had muskets when bahamut is watching.

On a side note: did you know that there is no such thing as a vodoo doll, it is something christian missionairies made up to scare people, they tried to make vodoo look as bad as they could but it is actually a reasonably 'friendly' religion, so instead they took typical rituals from western witchcraft and kept saying that, that was what vodoo was about untill everyone believed them.
As they where the ones that wrote the (history)books the general public is still convinced that vodoo is evil.
But as I do not think political correctness is that much to worry about, I have no real objections to a wrong vodoo class.

There where actually vodoo statues, a 20-30 centimeter stone/clay statue of a nonspecific person, with holes in it, the statue was devoted to a person through a ritual then small white stones where dropped into the holes suposedly curing akes and hurts near the location of the hole on the persons body.

The hex reversing is a neat idea.
I think there should be a skill like:
Remove 1 hex from target ally, remove the same hex from all team members
to give us a little more protection against AoE hexes.

Also bahamut is *chough*right*chough* condition prevention is long over due, hex prevention we already have a little of but taking in a nother angle than a can't be target of, or next hex fails; there is still plenty of room for more.

You've found a nice nieche to add a class in, keep up the good work.

In my defense System Crush, there are actual voodoo dolls. Now, whether they were an actual part of the voodoo religeon is hard to determine. I cant say at what point in time they were adapted but I will credit voodoo dolls to Haitians living in Louisiana, and not to Hollywood, Christianity, or anything like that.

Regardless, this is all fake, its just a big cluster of random ideas and I doubt it will be anything close to holding historical accuracy.

^^

I really like some of those ideas, perhaps develop it earlyer?

Anyways, "mimic lao" would be more fun in PvP then I already have with my W/R useing melandrus resiliance vs condition/hex spammers!

/signed on the concept of Witch Doctor

And if the African theme is out, what about Polynesia ? ? ?

Polynesian native healers are not dissimilar to the African/Carribean witch doctor, and are occasionally called "witch doctors" by natives tounge-in-cheek (because a few are quacks) and the tourist industry.

Real Polynesian native healers use plants and massage to relieve pain and cure conditions quite effectively. But...

Polynesians LOVE to make fun of their kau toketa fakaTonga (I think that's the Tongan term). These clowns tell people to twist themselves in ridiculous positions while snorting bugs and yelling polite greetings to random invisible dead people to cure common colds, it is said, for example, if I remember correctly. This is an exageration with tiny bits of truth behind it. Polynesians LOVE to exagerate. Their native variety is just one of the beloved versions of charismatic faith healers they visit religiously and laugh about (which also includes Chinese accu-puncture, Asian yoga/meditation, and, um, Christian charismatic faith healers).

I kind of put a related post on the "New chapters" thread here
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...0038233&page=2

(you got to read 'Epeli Haufa's wonderful short stories/novels for more info on funny Polynesian witch doctor quacks and other things. NO ONE seems to know about this rich, fascinating hidden culture, which is unfortunate. It is an awesome world)

Hirum.. if A.net did reveal the theme, that probablly mean they already got their new classes (if they do do new classes) down already for that chapter....

Anyhow.. Its not too bad.. always think a Witch Doctor-type has a good potential. But would not want to see it just have hex and curses.. but need something more. Vodoo doll is a good start (would like to see more unique play-mechanics for it), and if could add something more, would make it even better.
